Sadiqa Parker – Tradition, Transformed with Love
For Sadiqa Parker, koesisters were never far from reach. Growing up, the sweet, spiced aroma often filled her home as her mother prepared batches to sell on Sundays. It was more than just baking — it was tradition, and it lingered long after the last bite.
Though Sadiqa inherited her mother’s recipe, she never learned directly from her. Instead, she kept the handwritten notes, returning to them over the years, starting and stopping, but always drawn back. Koesisters, she says, “just stuck with me.”
Today, Sadiqa works full-time during the week, but on weekends her kitchen comes alive. What began as an extra source of income has become something much deeper — a way to honour her mother’s recipe, while reshaping it to meet today’s world. She now makes vegan koesisters, carefully adapting the family recipe so those who cannot have eggs or milk can still enjoy the tradition. “It’s still my mother’s recipe,” she insists. “Only now, it’s vegan.”
In her household, koesisters are more than a business — they are a shared craft. Sadiqa has passed on the techniques to her husband, who had no background in baking but now rolls up his sleeves when demand is high. Her daughters, too, have stepped in, surprising her with their skill whenever she asks them to start the process. For Sadiqa, this is what keeps the tradition alive: a whole household bound together by Sunday sweetness.
Her love for koesisters even extended beyond her own kitchen. For a time, she held classes, teaching others how to perfect the delicacy, making sure the craft reached more hands and more families. “It’s about passing it on,” she says simply.
And even with a schedule that overflows, she never tires. “You just do it — it just happens,” she laughs. For Sadiqa, the drive is not obligation but love. Love for the recipe her mother left behind, love for the tradition she is nurturing in her children, and love for the community that gathers around every Sunday batch.
In every golden ball of dough, every drop of syrup, Sadiqa’s koesisters carry more than flavour. They carry continuity — a tradition faithfully kept, reimagined for today, and ready to be passed to tomorrow.
